Richard and Kahlan fresh off their defeat of Hannis Arc, the resuscitated Emperor Sulachan and the horde of Half people, Richard’s promise to Kahlan for a “Golden Age” is abruptly halted by a new threat from a land afar, that promises bloodshed for all. Kahlan is nearly killed by an alien creature when she retired to her chambers, and is healed by Shale whom discovers that Kahlan is concealing a secret; she’s pregnant and with twins!

As Richard realizes that they are not safe in D’Hara, he plans to take the Kahlan via The Sliph to The Wizard’s Keep, when The Sliph revealed that she could not take Kahlan due to her condition which hampers the exodus from The People’s Palace.
