Ludwig Dreier was an abbot in the service of Hannis Arc. He possessed both the gift and occult abilities. He has a sadistic personality and took pleasure in torturing people to the cusp of life and death where time was in a whirl and ordinary people could give prophecy. He captured Kahlan and had her tortured with the hopes of getting useful prophecy.
He was forced to preserve Richard's body in exchange for Kahlan letting him go. On his way out of the citadel Kahlan killed him with an arrow at the back of his skull - saying she promised him that she would let him go, but did not promise him how far she would let him go.
