The Lurk was an imaginary being that Zedd told Richard, Kahlan, and Cara the Sisters of the Dark has conjured. This was to cover up the fact that Kahlan had, by mistake, summoned the Chimes of Doom, three beings who would drain the world of additive magic. The Lurk was named after a cat that Zedd's wife had owned. The cat was given the name since he was always lurking around. Richard later remembered his mother telling him a story about the cat and this was one of the reasons he began to doubt Zedd.
