- She has noticed that when the chimes were free he was never in her mind and that there were other times when Jagang was not present that she did not understand.
- Nicci also spends a great deal of time thinking about Richard trying to understand him.
- When Nicci is called back to Jagang she learns about Ann’s attempt to free the Sisters of Light by having them commit themselves to Richard in their hearts.
- Upon hearing this she understands why Jagang can not enter her mind and makes a decision to leave and find Richard.
- Before leaving she intercepts information about Richards’s location given by a tortured D’Haran messenger and questions Hania, a captured Mord Sith about Richard’s captivity.

- When Nicci finds out she goes to see him and tells him that he might be able to get out if they could find enough money to pay the fine.
- Richard tells her that he has money hidden but she would have to get one of Richards’s friends to help her get to it.
- Once Nicci has the money she assumes that he must have stolen it because there was so much.
- She rushes off to the blacksmith, Victor Cascella, who she assumes is one of his victims to return the money.

- As Richard's punishment for his crime Richard is assigned as a rock carver at the new palace where he is assigned to carve a hideous statue at his own expense as penance.
- The statue is to be completed in time for a winter dedication of Jagang's Palace.
- At this Richard nearly gives in to hopelessness, but after a night of sleep comes up with a plan to carve what he wants instead of what is asked.
- As the war wears on through the next summer Kahlan and the commanders realize that the New World cannot hope to keep the Imperial Order from taking Aydindril.
- Warren identifies a point that they would be able temporarily stop the advance prior to the onset of winter.
- The decision is made to evacuate everyone who will go to D’Hara beyond passes that would be the most defensible.
Late Fall
- Just before winter the D’Haran camp is attacked by assassins disguised as D’Haran soldiers. One of these assassins mortally wounds Warren, who calls out to capture but not kill the assassin.

- As Cara carries out Verna’s request, she discovers that the assassin is Gadi, who knows where Richard is.
- Armed with this information Kahlan and Cara tell the D’Haran forces to carry out the evacuation of Aydindril as planned. Then Kahlan and Cara depart to rescue Richard.

- As Richard works to convince the few Bandakar people who are hiding from the Order he realizes that the Bandakar people were banished not because they were ungifted but instead because they chose not to “see” evil.
- As Richard and the Bandakar who have been forced to see the truth about the Order work to retrieve the cure, they successfully eliminate Order occupation forces along the way.
- Meanwhile Zedd is being forced to identify artifacts looted from the Keep under threat that children will be tortured.

End Naked Empire[]
Begin Chainfire[]
- Story continues shortly after Richard and Kahlan have left the Bandakar Empire to meet with Nicci en route to Altur’Rang.
- Richard,Cara, and Kahlan set up camp near Altur'Rang
- The camp is attacked and Richard is gravely injured by a deflected crossbow bolt.
- Richard is carried to shelter and is healed by Nicci and wakes up to find Kahlan is missing and no one remembers her despite Richards attempt to prompt them to remember significant interactions with Kahlan.
- Meanwhile Nathan discovers a hidden cache of prophecy books that appear to be missing large sections of text where he clearly remembers that there should be text.
- Ann writes in her journey book to have Verna check the books in the People's Palace for the same problem.
- Zedd also discovers the same problem in books at the Wizards' Keep.
- Chase and Rachel leave the Keep to travel to get the rest of the family to come live at the Keep.
- Ann, Nathan and Tom depart to travel to Aydindril, leaving Jennsen in the Bandakar Empire
- On arriving in Altur’Rang Richard, Cara, and Nicci learn that Imperial Order troops are en route to Altur’Rang to put down the revolt.
- Richard decides to leave, believing the search for Kahlan is more important despite objections from the others that Kahlan is a delusion caused by Richard's near death from his injury.
- Nicci remains behind to assist with the gifted leaders of the approaching troops.
- Richards’s first objective is to go the Shota to ask for information.
- Shota demands that Richard go the Sword of Truth to Samuel as the ‘price’ for the names “Chainfire”, “The Deep Nothing”, and “The Four Headed Viper”.
- Nicci catches up with Richard and Cara just as they both arrive in Aydindril.
- Richard insists on digging up Kahlan's ‘grave’ to prove there is no body, only to find the grave does indeed contain a body.
- After this Richard is despondent over the loss of Kahlan and asks Nicci to be Death's Mistress for him just one more time, but Nicci refuses saying that since Richard taught her the meaning of life she can not take his life because of her respect of him.
- Instead she convinces Richard that the body does not prove he is wrong since the body is no longer identifiable.
- Nathan, Ann, and Tom arrive at the Keep and when they begin discussing the missing text in prophecy that apply to the time after Richard is born, Richard correctly realizes that the problem must some how be linked to Kahlan’s disappearance, although none of the others see this connection, much to Richards’s frustration.
- Ann, Nathan, and Zedd approach Nicci to ask her to “cure” Richards’s delusional obsession with finding a fictional woman by using Subtractive Magic to remove Richard’s memory of Kahlan.
- At this point Kahlan, who remembers nothing of who she is, is now a slave under the control of Sisters Ulicia, Tovi, Cecilia, and Armina at the People's Palace.
- Kahlan goes into the Garden of Life to steal the Boxes of Orden as instructed by the Sisters but only comes out with one because they would not fit in her pack.
- Sister Tovi is sent on with the first box while Kahlan is sent back to retrieve the other boxes. She is instructed to leave some of her “things” to make room, so she leaves Spirit, the statue Richard had carved for her.
- While considering the problem of Kahlan’s disappearance, Richard finds a book about the creation of the boxes of Orden in a secure room in the Keep that Zedd can not enter. He suddenly realizes that the “Four Headed Viper” is in fact the four Sisters of the Dark who have “Bonded” themselves to Richard.
- Nicci goes to Richard and tells him that he must get out of the Keep to protect himself from the well intentioned but extremely dangerous attempt to “cure” him.
- Richard realizes that Nathan, Ann, and Zedd might well be watching the exits from the Keep so suggests that they take the Sliph as the best way to prevent a confrontation and pursuit by the others.
- When Richard tell the Sliph he would like to travel to the People's Palace the Sliph volunteers that the People's Palace is a central site.
- As they are about to depart Richard asks the Sliph whether she knows anything about Chainfire or the Deep Nothing. When the Sliph says she knows several locations in The Deep Nothing and that Caska is a central site, they travel to Caska.
- In Caska, they meet Jillian who is Priestess of the Bones for her people.
- Jillian asks for help in chasing the Imperial Order troops away from her people.
- Richard sends Nicci and Cara to deal with the troops while Richard and Jillian look for books.
- Jillian finds a book named “Chainfire”.
- While Nicci examines the book Richard sees snake vine growing and realizes that the Boxes of Orden have been put in play.
- Richard, Nicci, and Cara travel to the People's Palace and find that the Boxes of Orden are missing, but also find the statue “Spirit”, the proof that Kahlan does exist.
- Richard receives a report of a woman matching Sister Tovi’s description has been found wounded and near death.
- Nicci realizes that the best way to get information from Tovi is for Nicci herself to question Tovi.
- Nicci heals Tovi just enough to enable her to answer Nicci's questions and so Nicci finds out the entire plot from Tovi before killing her.
- Nicci returns to Richard with Kahlan’s Confessor dress and begs forgiveness for not believing Richard about Kahlan’s disappearance.
- Richard confronts Ann, Nathan, and Zedd with the proof he has found and the fact that the Boxes of Orden are in play, reasoning that the Chainfire event is the final battle Richard must lead.
End of Chainfire[]
Begin Phantom[]
- Phantom begins at an inn where Sisters Ulicia, Cecilia, and Armina with Kahlan arrive to meet Tovi.
- The innkeeper recognizes Kahlan but is killed by the Sisters before he can name Kahlan as the Mother Confessor.
- They then learn from the innkeeper’s daughter that Sister Tovi was at the inn, but has already left for their planned final destination.
- At the Wizard's Keep Richard senses that something is not right. When he goes looking for the problem he finds Zedd, Ann, and Nathan with Nicci inside an analysis of the Chainfire spell.
- Richard realizes that something in the spell is corrupted and the corruption is killing Nicci.
- After Richard uses magic to shut down the spell the Beast appears, but Nicci managed to ward off the beast, nearly dying.
- Shota appears with Jebra with news that she has found Chase wounded but no news of Rachel. Shota has brought Jebra to Richard to have her convince Richard to take up leadership to defeat the Imperial Order. Shota also shows Richard what will happen if the Order wins.
- Rachel has been taken back to Tamarang to again be an object of abuse for Violet. Rachel spends time watching Six instruct Violet in making a drawing a picture of something that involves Richard.
- Richard travels back to the People's Palace to send the D’Haran army to the Old World to destroy the support for the Imperial Order army.
- Before Richard Nicci and Cara return to the Wizard's Keep, Berdine shows Richard and Nicci a hidden book that Darken Rahl frequently consulted which turns out to be the Book of Life. When Richard sees this book and another book Richard has a sudden insight regarding the Book of Counted Shadows, the Book of Life, and the Sword of Truth but in his hurry to get back to Zedd he does not confide the insight to Nicci.
- During the trip back to the Wizard's Keep Richard is attacked by the Beast and also by Six through the drawing Violet created, causing the Sliph to institute emergency measures to save Richard's life that results in Richard being separated from Nicci and Cara.
- Upon returning to the Wizard's Keep Nicci learns that Zedd has found another copy of the Book of Counted Shadows down in the Keep's catacombs.
- Richard is no longer able to access his gift.
- Nathan takes Richard's place as the Lord Rahl.
- When Richard recovers his conversation with the Sliph triggers an instruction and a test given to the Sliph by Baraccus explicitly for Richard. Once Richard realizes that he is being tested he correctly remembered the time and who first gave him this test allowing the Sliph to tell Richard about the Book Baraccus left for Richard with the Night Wisps.
- Richard retrieves the book but is captured by Six and taken to Tamarang to be tortured by Violet.
- Kahlan arrives at Caska with the Sisters and encounter Jillian who tells them that Sister Tovi has sent her to met them and guide them to her.
- When there arrive at the catacombs they instead meet Jagang and learn that Tovi is dead and that they have been following a trail set up by Jagang.
- At Caska Jagang has located another copy of the Book of Counted Shadows.
- Kahlan kills two guards and Sister Cecilia to help Jillian escape.
- Back with the Imperial Order Kahlan learns that Jagang has another copy of the Book of Counted Shadows the he got by using Gifted wizards he controlled from the Palace of the Prophets’ catacombs many years ago.
- When Six and Richard return to Tamarang they find that the Imperial Order army has arrived ahead of schedule.
- Richard asks Six where Kahlan is and he is surprised that Six knows who Kahlan is and that she is a captive of Jagang.
- While Six is negotiating with the Imperial Order commander, Richard seizes a sword from an Imperial Order soldier and kills many but surrenders when confronted by archers. The Imperial Order commander offers Richard a choice: death or join his division's Ja’La team.
- During the confusion in Tamarang Rachel escapes, taking the Box of Orden with her to the Wizard's Keep.
- After several months of studying The Book of Life Nicci realizes that the Book of Counted Shadows and all its copies are false keys to the power of Orden. Furthermore she realizes that in order for Richard to lead them in the final battle Richard must be a player for the power of Orden so she puts the boxes into play in Richard's name, resetting the time by which the boxes must be opened. It is the first day of winter(About Nov. 1). One of the boxes must be “opened” within a year.
- Richard arrives at the Imperial Order encampment outside the People's Palace and sees Kahlan.
It is the first day of winter
End Phantom[]
- Some time prior to the end of Phantom Jillian is recaptured by Jagang's men.
Begin Confessor[]
- It is still the first day of winter.
- Richard receives notification by the magic of Orden that he has been named a player.
- Ulicia also receives notification that a new player has been named.
- Richard realizes that he will be recognized when he is seen by Jagang.
- To counter this Richard asks for red paint under the pretext of making his Ja’La team appear more fearsome to their opponents.
- Richard sees Kahlan and Jagang at the first match, but Jagang is called away.
- The Order workers building the ramp up to the People's Palace uncover hidden catacombs.
- Jillian is brought to Jagang so that she can be used as leverage to control Kahlan.
- Zedd finds another copy of the Book of Counted Shadows.
- The Wizard's Keep is attacked by Six and the box of Orden is taken.
- After the attack Zedd realizes that the magic of the Keep is failing.
- Rachel has also disappeared and Chase has followed after her.
- Because of this the Keep must be put into a fail safe lockdown mode and everyone must leave.
- Nicci and Cara return to the People's Palace using the Sliph. Zedd, Tom and Rikka also depart for the Tamarang Palace.
- Rachel is being pursued by “creatures” that have been sent by Violet.
- Shota appears to Rachel as Rachel’s birth mother and gives her something that she will need.
- After Nicci returns to the People's Palace, Ann attempts to convince Nicci that Nicci must act to become the woman in Richard's life, but Nicci declines, saying that if she did such a thing she would not be worthy of Richard.
- Nicci and Ann are attacked by Sisters controlled by Jagang who have gotten into the crypts at the bottom of the People's Palace through the catacombs found by Jagang’s work teams.
- Ann is killed and Nicci is overpowered and taken to Jagang.
- Jennsen is captured in the Bandakar empire by Jagang's advance troop searching Nathan Rahl’s “Crypt” for important books.
- Another copy of the “Book of Counted Shadows” is located in the Nathan Rahl crypt.
- Unknown to Jagang, Nicci can ‘see’ Kahlan. Nicci realizes that Kahlan is the woman that belongs with Richard. Nicci avoids telling Kahlan anything about Kahlan’s connection to Richard for fear that the knowledge of the emotional connection to Richard would prevent Orden's restoration of the damage caused by Chainfire.
- Jagang begins staging troops in the crypt area of the People's Palace.
- It is now about 14 days after the first day of winter.
- Rachel continues to flee ahead of the “creatures” all the way to the caves at Tamarang, where she is confronted by Violet, who has drawn a picture of Rachel being killed by creatures.
- Rachel alters the drawing so that the girl in Violet's picture looks like Violet instead of Rachel, turning the creatures on Violet.
- Rachel then turns her attention to the drawing of Richard.
- Richard's team has beaten all the other teams and is now set to play against Jagang's own team.
- The game begins with an intensity that far exceeds any of the other games since Jagang's team intends to win at any cost.
- Richard intentionally manipulates the game so that the score remains close, causing an extreme level of tension and excitement among the spectators.
- At the end of the game Richard’s team has the last possession and must score two points in order to win.
- Although Richard scores the required points twice before the end of time, Jagang invalidates both scores on the pretext that Richard has stepped out of bounds.
- This infuriates many of the spectators, causing a riot, allowing Richard an opportunity to take a bow from one of the guards and to shoot Jagang. The arrow does not cause a fatal injury because Jagang moves at the last second.
- The riot and injury of Jagang allows Richard, Kahlan, Nicci, and Jillian to begin their escape, but just as they start for the Palace Jagang uses the Rada’Han on Nicci and Kahlan to immobilize them.
- Samuel appears and attempts to use the Sword of Truth to kill Richard, but the sword will not work against a player of the power of Orden.
- Richard tells Samuel to use the sword to cut the Rada’Han from Kahlan's neck and tells Kahlan to go with Samuel since they have been separated.
- Richard is nearly stopped from rescuing Nicci by one of Jagang's Sisters but Adie and General Meiffert arrive just in time to kill the Sister.
- Nicci tells Richard about the route into the Palace through the catacombs Jagang has uncovered.
- Richard, General Meiffert with Nicci and Adie, sneak through the catacombs past the troops' staging.
- Cara has also been trying to find out what happened to Nicci and Ann and has identified a section of the catacombs that is not as the crypt staff remembers.
- Just as Cara positions the palace guard in the area, a disturbance occurs on the other side of the wall that is not right. As the palace troops prepare to deal with what ever is happening, Richard smashes through the wall with Nicci.
- After the Imperial Order troops in the Palace are defeated, Richard turns his attention to helping Nicci, but is unable because he is cut off from his gift.
- Just as it appears that nothing can prevent Jagang from killing Nicci through the Rada’Han, Richard's gift returns through the efforts of Rachel, allowing Richard to remove the Rada’Han.
- Nicci begins teaching Richard what he needs to know to open the boxes of Orden.
- Jennsen is brought to Jagang along with the copy of the Book of Counted Shadows found in the Bandakar Empire. This new copy is the original and so does not need a Confessor to verify its words.
- Jagang gives Richard two weeks to surrender the People's Palace and give Jagang access to the Garden of Life, or have all the people in the palace killed in a full out assault.
- To use Orden to restore Kahlan's memory Richard must make a trip to the underworld to retrieve those memories which have been sent there by Chainfire.
- When Richard enters the underworld the beast attacks again but Richard defeats the beast at the loss of his way back to the Garden of Life.
- Shota has sent Rachel to the Mud people to have them call their ancestors' spirits to give Richard a way back.
- Kahlan, traveling with Samuel to Tamarang, is nearly raped by Samuel, but during the struggle Kahlan touches the Sword of Truth and in that instant she remembers what a Confessor is and is able to save herself by Confessing Samuel.
- Shortly after this Richard finds Kahlan, but much to Kahlan's dismay he will not tell her anything about Richard's connection to her.
- Zedd, Cara, and Tom have been captured by Six.
- Richard and Kahlan arrive in Tamarang to retrieve the copy of the book left by Baraccus, but as he locates the book Six again appears, but Shota is there to kill Six.
- Shota re-introduces Richard to Gregory the red dragon, son of Scarlet. Richard, Kahlan, Zedd, Cara and Tom are taken to the People's Palace by Gregory.
- At the People's Palace Richard surrenders to Jagang.
- Jagang, anxious to reclaim Nicci, goes to the cell she is locked up in without a guard. When Jagang arrives in the cell, Nicci puts the Rada’han that Ann left in that cell on Jagang, allowing Nicci to control Jagang.
- When Nicci and Jagang return to the Garden of Life they watch as Jagang's Sisters attempt to open the boxes of Orden only to see Jagang's Sisters and men consumed by the power of Orden.
- Richard explains that the power of Orden can only be used when the user does not have hate in his heart. Nicci then kills Jagang.
- Richard then uses the power of Orden to separate the world and sends the people who do not want to live with magic to the new world.
- Richard is likely 27 at this point.
- Jennsen, Tom, and the Bandakar people also choose to go to the new world as well so as not to contaminate the world of magic with the ungifted blood line.
- Richard returns the Temple of the Winds to the world of life and makes red fruit safe to eat again as well.
- After the worlds are separated and the "Order" people are gone, Nathan reveals that Richard has taken the very branch of the prophecy Ann and Nathan were attempting to avoid. Legend of the Seeker discrepancies[]
The televised series has a radically different timeline that that of the books. The books have these differences:
- Richard thought of Zedd as his best friend and not just a crazy old man as shown.
- Richard's father (George Cypher) was killed the day Kahlan came to Westlands. In the book it was 3 weeks before.
- Richard Rahl was approximately 22, not 24-25, when he became the Seeker.
- Kahlan Amnell was around 26 when Richard was around 24, making her two years older than him.
- The boundary between D'Hara the Midlands and the Westlands had been put up by Zedd as the D'Haran war came to an end while in the show it had already been up for hundreds of years.
- In the book Kahlan comes through with the help of 5 third-order wizards who later kill themselves. In the show these third-order wizards are never mentioned.
- In the book wizard Geller (second-order wizard) works for the Queen in Tamarang but who actually secretly worked against Darken Rahl and helped in getting a box of Orden away from him via Rachel. In the show, Geller (first-order wizard) instead works for Darken Rahl and never redeems himself and is killed by Khalan and instead Zedd is the one to befriend Rachel and gets the box away from Darken Rahl.
- Richard found a way to be with Kahlan after the defeat of Darken Rahl despite her confessor powers and soon weds him.
- Richard was not rescued from the Mord Sith by Kahlan.
- Richard killed Darken Rahl by tricking him to open the wrong box of Orden, He did not open them himself.
- Banelings are entirely different beings in the show where they're basically "zombies" sent back from the underworld after death by the Keeper (and play a major role in the show) while in the book they are just regular people who have turned to the Keeper.
- Zedd was never kidnapped by Denna.
- Richard killed Denna before the boxes of Orden were ever opened where he released her from her madness as she herself willingly lets him do so. She later helps Richard out multiple times after her death as where Denna never has this change of heart in the show and they never develop that relationship.
- Michael willingly joined Darken Rahl for power, not because he was forced.
- Darken Rahl had blond hair, not black.
- The mud people are crucial to the book, yet aren't mentioned in the series.
- Richard does not have the Book of Shadows memorized in the series.
- Darken Rahl was Richard's Father, not half brother.
- In the show Zedd was employed by Panis Rahl as a wizard and was responsible for the birth of Darken Rahl as he made once-infertile Panis fertile.
